Wouldn’t it be great if you could just get hair extensions and never have to worry about them again? Of course, if you were going to wish for something, you should probably wish all the hair was really yours and you had a full time hairdresser tending to you Rachel Zoe style!

Alas, such is not the case. Although, I do think that hair extensions are a little bit magic and a little bit work. Here are some basic tips you can use for any hair extension system. These are the basic guidelines I give my clients. As silly or insignificant as they may sound, you would be surprised at how much happier you will be if you follow these rules. Trust me, as a stylist, I really do know if you someone has not been following to the rules.

Basic Hair Extension Care

You will need to purchase specific products to take care of your hair extensions. Using the right products will keep your hair extensions looking beautiful and make sure they last as long as possible.

Tape Hair Extensions

  1. Do not get your hair wet and/or shampoo your hair for at least 48 hours after your application.
  2. When you do shampoo your hair extensions, do so in an even downward motion, making sure not to pull or twist the attachments.  Do not apply any conditioner on your roots near the attachments.  Only use conditioner from the middle of your hair towards the ends.
  3. Rinse conditioner from your hair as usual, and towel dry to remove the majority of moisture from the extensions.
  4. Blow-dry the roots of your hair first, where the panels are attached.  When the panels are wet is when they are the most fragile. Pressing the panels together is always a good idea.
  5. Once your roots are mostly dry, spray from the mid-shaft to the ends of your hair with and Easihair Pro Leave-in Conditioner Spray.
  6. Spray 2-3 pumps of Heat Treat and Shine from the mid-shaft down to the ends of your hair.
  7. At this point you can apply any other styling products to your hair and finish styling, or let it air dry.
  8. If you are blow-drying your hair dry, use the Heat Treat & Shine spray as needed to restore shine and moisture to extensions.  Use one spritz at a time, as it can be over-used and make the hair oily.
  9. On a daily basis, make sure you use your boar’s hair brush and brush out your hair from roots to end.  Make sure there is never any tangling whatsoever in your hair. Our motto is: Don’t fear the brush!
  10. On a weekly basis, go through each panel and press them together to make sure they are secured.

Fusion Hair Extensions

  1. Do not shampoo your hair for at least 48 hours. Doing so will compromise the integrity of the bond. Your extensions will not last as long.
  2. You will be using Hairdreams Hair care. They are specifically designed for fusion hair extensions. Beauty Shampoo, Regeneration Conditioner, PH and Shine, Hair Fluid Serum. Using non recommended hair care will affect how the extensions look, feel and can even lessen the wear time.
  3. When you do shampoo your hair extensions, do so in an even downward motion, making sure not to pull or tangle the attachments. Gently massage your hair extension. Try to avoid vigorous scrubbing.
  4. Do not apply any conditioner on your roots near the attachments.  Only use conditioner from the middle of your hair towards the ends.
  5. Rinse conditioner from your hair as usual, and towel dry to remove the majority of moisture from the extensions.
  6. Blow-dry the roots of your hair first, where the bonds are attached.  When the bonds are wet is when they are the most fragile.
  7. Spray PH and Shine from mid-shaft down to the ends of your hair. A little goes a long way.
  8. Brush with your Hairdreams boar’s hair brush to thoroughly detangle before drying.  Use this brush at all times when brushing out your hair extensions.
  9. Add a small amount of Hair Fluid to the ends of your hair. This will help prevent split ends.
  10. You can apply any other styling products to your hair and finish styling, or let it air dry.  If you are blow-drying your hair dry, use the PH and Shine spray as needed to restore shine and moisture to extensions.  {Use one spritz at a time, as it can be over-used and make the hair oily.}

Fusion Hair Extension Daily Care Regimen:

  1. Lightly Spray PH and Shine from mid-shaft down to the ends.
  2. Make sure you use your Hairdreams boar’s hair brush and brush out your hair from roots to end.  Brush liberally in between where the the hair extensions are attached to your own hair to make sure there is never any tangling near the bond.
  3. Make sure you are separating the bonds from each other each and every day. This can be done throughout the day. This step is often overlooked and is one of the most important.
  4. Style hair as usual.
  5. When sleeping at night pull hair into a loose braid or ponytail. You will want to make sure to sleep on a satin pillow case. This will help keep your hair from tangling during the night.

Pool Time Regimen for All Extension Systems:

We do not recommend pool and hair extensions. However, we know it happens, here are some basic things you can do to minimize damage.

  1. Wet your hair with water first. Spray a leave in conditioner on the ends.
  2. Put your hair into a braid or a low ponytail secured with rubber bands all the way to the end.
  3. When you are done with the pool rinse the chlorine out of your hair and start your daily regimen.
  4. You may wish to use a deep conditioner on the ends of your hair after pool time to help restore the moisture balance to your hair extensions.
  5. Extended pool or salt water exposure will lessen the longevity of your hair extensions.

What to do if Something Goes Wrong:

  1. Remain calm and call the salon. Most problems can be fixed very easily.
  2. Grab a bobbi pin and secure the loose extension back into place. If the extension is no longer attached be sure to keep it and bring it in with you.
  3. If something doesn’t seem right just give the salon a call. You will go through a troubleshooting process that will get you back to awesome in no time.
  4. Little things happen from time to time so if you need to schedule a “quick fix” appointment or if you have any additional questions please do not hesitate to contact the salon.
  5. We do not recommend wearing any hair extension system for more than the suggested time.
